Matthew

Matthew is a seasoned real estate photographer with over a decade of experience capturing the essence of properties across the globe. His journey has taken him from the historic streets of Europe to the vibrant landscapes of America, the serene beauty of Canada, and the tropical allure of the Dominican Republic.

Throughout his career, Matthew has had the privilege of working on various high-profile projects, including photographing and filming TV shows. One of the highlights of his career was shooting the Survivor TV show during the 2017 and 2018 seasons. This high-profile reality show, known for its dynamic and unpredictable environments, presented several unique challenges:

Diverse and Extreme Environments: The show was filmed in remote locations that varied from dense tropical forests to rugged, open beaches. These environments posed difficulties in terms of lighting, weather conditions, and terrain, all of which affected both photography and videography.

Dynamic and Fast-Paced Action: Survivor is renowned for its fast-paced and constantly changing scenarios, including intense challenges, spontaneous interactions among contestants, and high-stakes moments. Capturing these moments in a way that conveyed the excitement and intensity of the show required quick thinking and adaptability.

Limited Equipment and Resources: Due to the remote locations, there were constraints on the type and amount of equipment that could be used. This limited access to power sources, backup gear, and immediate technical support, which required innovative solutions and careful planning.

How I Overcame the Challenges:

- Adaptation to Environmental Conditions: To address the diverse and extreme environments, I meticulously planned and prepared for each shoot. This involved researching specific locations and weather conditions in advance, selecting appropriate equipment, and adjusting camera settings to optimize for varying light conditions. For example, I used weather-sealed cameras and lenses to handle moisture and dust and employed portable lighting solutions to deal with low-light situations.

- Agility and Quick Response: Capturing the dynamic and fast-paced action required me to remain highly alert and flexible. I developed strategies for anticipating key moments and adjusting my shooting techniques on the fly. I coordinated closely with the production team to ensure I was in the right place at the right time, utilizing rapid adjustments to my framing and focus to capture the essence of the action.

- Innovative Use of Limited Resources: With the constraints of limited equipment and resources, I became adept at making the most out of what was available. This included using portable battery packs, optimizing camera settings for various conditions, and employing lightweight gear that could be easily transported. I also utilized backup plans, such as additional memory cards and redundancy in storage solutions, to ensure that no critical moments were missed.

- Collaboration and Communication: Effective communication with the production team and fellow crew members was crucial. By maintaining open lines of communication, I was able to coordinate effectively, share insights, and adjust our approach as needed. This teamwork was essential in ensuring that all logistical and creative aspects of the project were aligned.

Daily Responsibilities:

My role involved efficiently managing the filming schedule based on the daily call sheet and collaborating closely with the production team and on-set reporters to ensure a seamless production process. I was responsible for capturing captivating footage in locations like Lanza del Norte and selecting frames for interviews. I filmed dynamic "reality" scenes and created video illustrations for archival content.

I embarked on daily trips to diverse locations such as Santo Domingo, Punta Cana, and others to film rewarding experiences including dining, private villas, parties, diving adventures, hot air ballooning, paragliding, and music concerts. I also traveled to various set locations like Playa Coson, El Limon, and La Barbacoa to capture intense sports trials, elimination games, and exciting reward activities.

I took personal responsibility for the maintenance and care of filming equipment to ensure high-quality results. I proficiently operated professional-grade digital camera equipment like the Sony PMW-F3L, Sony PXW-FS7, and Sony PDW-850, capturing stunning visuals with precision. Thriving in multicultural environments, I used effective communication skills to foster harmonious collaboration with team members from diverse backgrounds.

Despite the numerous challenges, the experience of working on the Survivor TV show was incredibly rewarding. The final footage and photographs effectively captured the excitement and drama of the show, contributing to its compelling storytelling. My ability to adapt to challenging conditions, combined with my proactive problem-solving skills, played a key role in the success of the project.
